Vasily Livanov

Vasily Livanov, whose interpretation of Sherlock Holmes is one of the most rewarding, participated in the Russian productions of Conan Doyle’s stories about the famous detective, and built up a huge following in the Soviet Union.

During a visit to London Livanov gave details about the external shots of "Victorian London" that were filmed on location in Riga and Tallin. The River Thames in the Sign of Four was in fact the River Neva in St Petersburg and the Reichenbach Falls scenes were filmed in freezing Georgia!.

Location location location: UK's top cinematic spots

Abstracted from the Independent

Location location location: UK's top cinematic spots

By Nick Daubeny

The Flaxman Gallery and Gustav Tuck Theatre at University College London represent the Paris Architectural School interiors in the film “Inception”.

Farnborough Airport was used for Tokyo. On “Band of Brothers” and “Full Metal Jacket”, he filmed Vietnam at Beckton Gas Works in the East End of London.

Glencoe, Scotland we filmed there “Highlander” and later Harry Potter..

Glen Nevis, was used for medieval villages in Highlander and Braveheart . In Rob Roy.they built a village under Ben Nevis but then, because of heavy rain, decided to rebuild it in Perth.

Dover Castle, Hamlet, used the keep, the moat and corridors.

Durham Cathedral, Elizabeth, and Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.

28 Days Later, shot in Whitehall and V for Vendetta,

Greenwich Naval College, King Ralph, Patriot Games and The Madness of King George, and with a chapel that stood in for a respected Roman Catholic Church in Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Lancaster House, Reds, King Ralph, National Treasure, Madame Sousatzka and Nine.

Hatfield House, Orlando, The Golden Age, V for Vendetta and out in the woods at Hatfield, was built the concentration camp Landsberg, Band of Brothers.

Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, Black Beauty, Barry Lyndon, Hamlet, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Gulliver’s Travels

Borough Market, London, Bridget Jones and her diary, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, What Every Girl Wants, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. This is Dickensian London. Not many yards from here Dickens set Nancy’s murder in Oliver Twist. It was Elizabethan low-life London , Shakespeare’s re-created Globe Theatre is just round the corner, but for street life from the 18th century onwards, it has to be on the scouting list.

Somerset House, London, Portrait of a Lady, Sherlock Holmes, Goldeneye and Sleepy Hollow.

Nick Daubeny is a location manager whose recent credits include 'Inception', 'The Pacific', the 'Harry Potter' titles, 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age', 'Mission: Impossible III', 'V for Vendetta' and 'Band of Brothers'

Reach For The Sky

It was probably around 1955 when I was a pupil at St Joseph's Primary School in Chalfont St Peter when I saw a crew filming a scene for the film.

It was when about 4 of them, all from hospital in bandages, were driving an open top Bentley. They came out from Bull Lane, near St Joseph's RC Church and onto the main road and roared up the hill towards the Three Pigeons pub & Gerrards Cross. Just as they got onto the main road a furniture lorry came out from a side turning and nearly hit them and the driver shouted out, 'What's your name, Death?'

As a young person what intrigued me is the number of times they shot the scene and the time it seemed to take.

The dance hall scenes (interior) were shot at The Palais De Dance, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire.

I was a there during filming and I recognise lots of people that I knew at the time in the dance hall sequence. I was 19.

Wendy Nimz

Wonderful, Wendy, thanks for this info. If you can pull one of the stills, and add a few names we'll blog it.

Associate Research Assistant status

Associate Research Assistant status will be freely granted to anyone who makes a significant contribution to this site.

This contribution could perhaps be:

· pulling some 20 or more stills from a favourite film or films, those that are listed on the home page of the site, film/movie list, and shown in amber are preferred, but any feature film made anywhere in the world at any time is of interest, even those currently in production.

· maybe snapping a dozen or so locations that we can use, but with an actor in view and obvious architectural detail. Not sand dunes, open fields, trees or, country lanes.

· finding 40 or more matching locations through Google Earth. BUT, do give the full copyright reference if the photos are not your own work.

· maybe researching into the films and locations, and providing information that is of use, for films, world-wide, that we haven’t yet included on our lists, and made at any time, or even in the process of production.

· maybe sending in five copies of films that we wish to use.

· possibly creating sub-pages of useful information on airports, railway stations, gas works, power stations, monuments, public buildings, etc that have been used in feature films, or even actors, directors or genre that are applicable to our search for locations

· perhaps creating sub-pages for your favourite films and their filming sites and locations

· or even selling advertising space on our site

Each ARA will, in the future, have access to a sub-site, or sub-pages where, through a password controlled access, you, the ARA, will be able to freely load your work, your “thens”, your “nows” your comments, your blogs, and where persons interested in “your” film or films will be able to contact you directly, and you will be able to add your/their comments, photos , suggestions and information. This we are working on, and, if you know how we can do it simply and cheaply please let us know. These pages will be linked to the main site but give autonomy to the ARA controller, you. These “parallel” sites will contain your name, and, in recognition of your contributions your status will be elevated to that of Research Manager. Each new parallel site created will be announced on the main site blog.

We are not ungenerous with our largesse, but it seems that we will be unable to afford to accommodate all those of you who have written in, and have made no worthwhile contribution, sorry, but we are not slaving away in order to provide you with a few spare hours of entertainment, it has to be a two-way street. But if there are any of you out there who believe that you have made a reasonable unpaid contribution to the site, and, if we haven’t already sent you a complimentary ARA notification, then let use know, with full details of your contributions, and we’ll rectify the omission.

For those of you unable to make any serious contribution, an enrolment fee of £10.00 is required in order to start to pay something towards our expenses that we incur whilst providing you with endless hours of cinematographic pleasure.

Any DVD’s that you request from us will be sent out on the understanding that you are first listed as an ARA and then will be expected to contribute to the site in the manner or style that we have listed above, and, as an associate research assistant you are also entitled to further copies of films for “research purposes”, you only paying for the costs of copying and postage.

We look forward to hearing from you

  • with information of benefit to the site,
  • or your claim for ARA status, see requirements above,
  • or your payment via PayPal of £10.00 to payments@reelstreets.com

All ARAs will have unlimited accesses to the ReelStreets site where there are almost 400 films and some 12 000 “thens” and “nows” shots, on line, for your delectation, with another couple of hundred waiting to be loaded as time and finances allow.

There is an "object" line on the email………..don't just put in “films”, “film title”, “reelstreets” …or even, “can you just”, “hi”, “hello”, “hope you get this email”, “from George”, these are not easy to refind, file or remember, so will generally get lost. Of course those of you who don’t even bother to put a subject on the object line, just get automatically spammed.

Then there are the people who have “something of interest to offer”, “I know all the locations for……….”, “is anyone working on film…..….”, obviously looking for free entry to the site, and no, most of them we never hear from again. You know who you are, so, as I said before, it is a two way street, either contribute time or cash, or sorry, we can’t help.

I see that in the last three months we have answered more than 600 emails, and just at 5 minutes each is some 50 hours at a minimum rate of £ 15 an hour, or £750, three thousand pounds a year!

And if you are sending some money, tell us, as often PayPal doesn’t. But do wait at least 48 hours (CET) before you tell us that you haven’t received your login details, and maybe adjust your international time clocks and also remember that weekends are not completely devoted to ReelStreets.

Hope to welcome you aboard.

Best wishes

John Tunstill

I BELIEVE IN YOU

OK, OK, enough already!
ib005 shows a power station with four chimneys inset from the ends of the building. Believed to be Battersea, but claimed as Lots Rd by Pat Loobey, sadly now gone to the great location gatherer in the sky.
ib005n shows a power station, with two chimneys, inset, and taken from Cringle Street SW8. This corresponds with the inset of the chimneys, but not the number of chimneys, and we know that chimneys come and go. However, if the current Cringle Street is on the same orientation of the old Cringle Street on my old map, one could definately see Battersea Power Station from the end of the road which suggests that Pat made a mistake.
ib005a shows the same still as ib005, but ib005an is taken from Thorndike Road SW10, and shows lots Road Power station, inset chimneys and only two of them, so it looks as though Barry Harmsman was wrong, as was Pat, and this pic will now been removed.
There were of course Fulham, which appears in Optimists of Nine Elms, and Bankside power stations at one time, just to add to the confusion.
Parts of Lots Road are shown in Deadly Affair, and Lots Road and Fulham power stations appear in Optimists.

Architectural Film Locations

The correlation between architecture and films has been around for decades and some locations are so instantly recognisable by fans that they are forever associated with the movie that they were featured in.

For example, the most famous scene of the 1978 film adaptation of The Thirty Nine Steps will be remembered by many film buffs for the epic scene where Richard Hannay is left hanging from the clock face of Big Ben in London, the thirty nine steps in this instance being a reference to the number of steps in the clock tower.

More recently, The Louvre in Paris was used extensively in The Da Vinci Code featuring Tom Hanks, as the museum was an integral part of the storyline. Permission was granted to film inside and outside the building, including the glass pyramid and surrounding Louvre Palace.

The 1971 version of Get Carter with Michael Caine was filmed on location in the north east of England, taking advantage of the imposing architecture of Newcastle city centre and the post modern concrete structures of Gateshead, particularly the iconic multi story car park which was filmed in all its urban glory without any changes being made to the real streets and buildings.

In complete contrast, the entire seafront, promenade and cinema at Redcar in Cleveland were transformed from a busy modern day seaside town into an impressive likeness of war torn Dunkirk for the Oscar winning movie Atonement. Hundreds of local residents turned out each day of the shoot to witness the unique re-enactment of this historic event and many were actually hired as extras for the crowd scenes.

Vampire films have risen in popularity over the last few years and the magnificent gothic buildings of Prague provided the perfect backdrop for movies such as Van Helsing and Blade II. Film directors favour the Czech Republic capital city as a shooting location for a variety of genres because the array of amazing architecture lends itself beautifully to authentic looking scenes that could be set in the past or present.

Visiting former movie locations around the world is an increasingly popular hobby as there are plenty of online resources and even downloadable location maps enabling you to find out exactly where your favourite movie scenes were shot. It is interesting to see what the original buildings look like when compared to the finished scene and how much they have been changed, or in some cases, used exactly as they are.

Sometimes a director will allow people to watch filming from behind a designated cordon when using buildings on location that are difficult to isolate, but production companies place a strict ban on the general public taking photographs or video footage during filming.

Movie posters and postcards are readily available to purchase on a film`s release and are a great way of comparing an area before and after shooting. These not only make great collectable items of movie memorabilia, but are a perfect memento for reference when you have visited a film location.
